Behind the Seams: Custom Tuxedos

The tux rental is a wedding-disaster cliché: stories of high-water pants, missing buttons, and mismatched accessories abound. What’s a groom to do?
Consider a custom-tailored tuxedo instead. Custom tailoring ensures high quality, a perfect fit, and excellent personal service—all sorely lacking at the tuxedo rental place in the mall.
“Only a small percentage of guys can find the perfect look off the rack,” says Christopher A’Hern, owner of Baltimore’s Jack Christopher Custom Clothing. “Our work is for the man who wants something better.”

Lapels: Choose from shawl, peak, or notched. Stick with traditional black satin or spice it up with color.
Waistcoat: The sky’s the limit on colors and fabrics. The groomsmen can coordinate with the bridesmaids’ gowns for a unified look.
Buttons: Functional buttons are essential. Ask for contrasting thread around the buttonholes for luxurious detail.
Pants: Your tailor will know whether you’re best suited for pleats, flat-front pants, or inverted pleats.
Collar: Raise the style bar with a higher-than-average collar. This works particularly well for taller gents.
Shoulders: A tailor will make sure the fit is perfect through the shoulders—padding shouldn’t extend beyond the shoulder line.
Pockets: You can pick from welt, flap, patch, or angled to spice up your look
Jacket: Unlike a rental tux, a custom suit won’t be boxy. The jacket should end midway between the back of the collar and the floor.
